The ancient god of time in Javanese and Balinese mythology. He is also the death-god, whose appearance to a person was inexorably the sign of that person's death. He gave wealth to young men on certain conditions but at the end of the appointed time reappeared to claim his due. Any defaulters were punished. In Javanese sculpture, the so-called 'Kala-heads' are the heads of demonic monsters associated with death and retribution. Kala may also have be an ocean-god.
