by Micha F. Lindemans
A ceremony for the commemoration of the dead on New Ireland (Bismarck Archipelago). At the same time, it is a initiation ceremony for young men. The spirits of the ancestors attend these ceremonies and arrive in visible form in a fish-shaped, 12 foot long boat. These ancestral spirits are often sculpted in wood, seated in their boat.
