The king of Sparta, husband of Leda, father of the Dioscuri, Clytemnestra, and Helen. His brother Hippocoon banished him from Sparta, but he was restored to power by Heracles. Because he had no children who could ascend to the throne (the Dioscuri had been given a place among the gods), he gave his realm to his son-in-law Menelaus.
