In the Vedic tradition, Yama is the first human who died and found the path to the realm of the dead. He is a son of the sun-god Surya and together with his twin sister Yami they are the progenitors of the human race. The fifth day of the Indian feast of Lamps is dedicated to this pair. In the old-Iranian Avesta, he is the mythical king Yima.
