Calamus

A son of the river god Meander. He loved another youth named Carpus. Both were bathing one day in the Meander and Calamus wanted to show his friend that he was the better swimmer, but Carpus died in the contest. The grieving Calamus allowed himself to drown also and was transformed into a reed (calamos) by the river bank.
