Iphis

A beautiful youth of Salamis who was of mean birth and who worked as a shepherd. He loved the girl Anaxarete, of similar rank in life, but she coldly rejected his addresses. In desperation, he hanged himself. When the girl looked upon his corpse and remained unmoved, Aphrodite turned her into stone.
