Mardöll

"Sea-brightener?" One of the names that Freyja gave herself when she went out among unknown peoples to search for her missing husband Óðr. It is found as one of the names of Freyja in the Nafnaþulur.

In Skáldskaparmál, Snorri Sturluson quotes a verse by Einarr Skúlason in which a kenning for gold is Tear of Mardöll. He also quotes from the ancient poem Bjarkamál, in which gold is periphrased as Weeping of Mardöll. This seems in line with other Freyja kennings for gold.
