Aeionian dragon

A dragon, a son of Ares, who guarded the god's sacred spring of Ismene at Thebes until Cadmus — with the help of Athena — killed it. Cadmus took the dragon's teeth and following Athena's advice, planted them in the earth. A number of armed men, fully grown, emerged from the ground: the Spartae ("the Sown").
