Aurgelmir

"Mud-yeller." In the eddic poem Vafþrúðnismál, Odin asks Vafþrúðnir who was the oldest of the Æsir or Ymir's sons. The jötunn replies that this was Aurgelmir, father of Þrúðgelmir and grandfather of Bergelmir:

Countless winters,
ere earth was formed,
was Bergelmir born;
Thrûdgelmir was his sire,
his grandsire Aurgelmir.

Stanza 31 adds that he was created by the venom that dropped down from Élivágar and which waxed until it was a giant.

Snorri Sturluson says that Aurgelmir was the name by which Ymir was known among the jötnar. The name is also found among the list of giants in the Nafnaþulur.
