In folklore, fairies are dimunitive supernatural beings resembling small persons, male or female, and dwelling in an imaginary region called fairyland. They can be benevolent or malevolent.

The name comes from the forteenth-century French word faere, meaning "enchantment." This in turn comes from fae, "fairy," from Latin fata, "the Fates," the plural form of fatum, "fate."
