haliae

A generic term for the nymphs of the sea, the daughters of various marine deities. The best known among the haliae are the Nereides, the fifty daughters of Nereus and Doris.

Iconography

The haliae were depicted as beautiful maidens riding the backs of dolphins or sea-monsters.
