Haus-schmiedlein

"Little house-smith." In Bohemian folklore, mine spirits who make a noise as if laboring hard at the anvil, hence their name. They announce the doom of a miner by knocking three times distinctly. When any lesser evil is about to befall a miner they are heard digging, pounding, and imitating other kinds of work.
