"He of the Winnowing-fan." An epithet of Dionysus, alluding to a fertility aspect of the god. The name means "He of the Winnowing-fan"; a sort of shovel with which the cut grain was thrown into the air to separate the chaff. The winnowing-fan was one of the implements used in the Mysteries.
