phi ton mai

In Thai tradition, the phi ton mai are the ghosts that reside in trees. They can be either malevolent or benevolent. Trees that are inhabited by a ghost are wrapped with cloth. If such a tree needs to be cut down for whatever reason, the spirit of the tree will first be warned and given ample time to find a new tree.
