Svalinn
"Cooling." The shield that the gods placed before the chariot of the sun — guided by Sól and pulled by the horses Árvakr and Alsviðr — to prevent the earth from being set on fire. It is attested in Grímnismál:
- Svalin the sheild is called,
- which stands before the sun,
- the refulgent deity:
- rocks and ocean must, I ween,
- be burnt,
- fell it from its place.
