Svalinn

"Cooling." The shield that the gods placed before the chariot of the sun — guided by Sól and pulled by the horses Árvakr and Alsviðr — to prevent the earth from being set on fire. It is attested in Grímnismál:

Svalin the sheild is called,
which stands before the sun,
the refulgent deity:
rocks and ocean must, I ween,
be burnt,
fell it from its place.
