"haunted lantern." A ghost lantern carried by obake, ghosts. The lantern, which has eyes and a large protruding tongue, serves as a home for the ghosts of those who died with hate still in their hearts and who are thus earthbound.

Any person who lights a bakechochin will be attacked by the hateful ghost residing in it.
