goryō

The vengeful spirits of people who have died from transgressions committed against them or from false accusations.

A well-known goryō was Sugawara Michizane (845-903), a scholar and official in the Heian court. He was falsely accused and subsequently exiled. After his death he appeared in the emperor's dreams as a goryō. See also Tenjin.
