Hárbarðr

Hárbarðr

"Grey beard." The name Odin assumes in the eddic poem Hárbarðsljóð (the Lay of Hárbard). In the disguise of the rude and obnoxious ferryman Hárbarðr, Odin and Thor compete in a flyting contest. At the end of the poem, Hárbarðr refuses passage and Thor continues to his destination, Verland, on foot.
