Mímisbrunnr

"Mímir's well." One of the three wells said to be located beneath the roots of the world-tree Yggdrasil, the root that runs towards Jötunheimr. The well is associated with Mímir and is attested in Völuspá:

Odin! I know all,
where thou thine eye didst sink
in the pure well of Mim.
Mim drinks mead each morn
from Valfather's pledge.

Snorri Sturluson says that in this well "wisdom and understanding are stored; and he is called Mímir, who keeps the well. He is full of ancient lore, since he drinks of the well from the Gjallar-Horn. Thither came Allfather and craved one drink of the well; but he got it not until he had laid his eye in pledge." At Ragnarök, Odin shall ride to the well and consult with Mímir for himself and his host.
