Rongo-mai

The chief of the Mahuhu canoe in the Migration of the Māori people from Hawaiki to New Zealand. He was drowned in the upsetting of the canoe; his body was eaten by the araara fish, since held sacred by the Ngapuhi and Rarawa tribes, which claim descent from Rongo-mai.
