Ārai-te-uru

The name of a celebrated female tāniwha, or water monster. She was the mother of all great water monsters, among whom Mangamuka, Ohopā, Orirā, Waihou, Waima, and Wairere. Ārai-te-uru and Taungeri are the guardians of Hokianga Bay.
