Hei

A legendary chief in the migration stories. He sailed in the Arawa canoe from Hawaiki to New Zealand and settled at Whitianga (Mercury Bay). After his death he was buried at O-a-Hei, on the extremity of the promontory. Waitaha, son of Hei, and Tapuika, son of Tia, and Tangihia, son of Ngātoro-i-rangi, remained a Maketu.
