tupua

The name for a goblin, a fairy, a monster, a demon: He tipua, ara he atua penei me te patupaearehe o te ao nei;1 Waka o Whiro me te tipua ka ripiripia, ka toetoe.2

It also the spirit of one who when living was noted for the powerful effect of his incantations (karakia).
